Will a rooftop tent fit on my car? The big brand check
One of the most frequent questions we receive is: "I drive a [car brand], can I even mount a rooftop tent on it?"
The short answer is: Yes! Our rooftop tents are designed to fit almost any vehicle, regardless of brand – from agile small cars to spacious vans. The only thing standing between you and your next adventure is checking your vehicle's owner's manual.
Here you'll find out which of our models best suits your car and what you need to pay attention to regarding the roof load.
The Golden Rule: Observe the Roof Load
Before we get to the car brands, a brief technical digression. The crucial factor is not the brand, but your car's permissible dynamic roof load. This is the weight your car is allowed to carry on its roof while driving.
- At least 50 kg: Necessary for our lighter models (e.g., Compact).
- At least 75 kg: Ideal for larger tents or family models.
Important: Don't worry about the weight when you're sleeping in the tent! When stationary, your car's roof can withstand many times the dynamic roof load (static roof load). So you won't break through if you're lying up there with the whole family.
1. The Small & Compact: Little Space, Lots of Freedom
Many believe you need a large SUV for a rooftop tent. Wrong! Especially on small cars, a rooftop tent not only looks cool, but it also turns the city car into a full-fledged camper. Since the roof load here is often lower (usually around 50 kg), our lightest model is the perfect choice.
Our recommendation: The Compact model.
Examples of suitable car brands & models:
- Mini Cooper: The classic. With a Compact on top, the Mini becomes a stylish adventurer.
- Fiat 500: Yes, that works too! (Provided it has no glass roof restrictions).
- Suzuki Jimny: The small off-roader loves the Compact rooftop tent.
- VW Polo / Opel Corsa: The typical small cars are ideal carriers for spontaneous weekend trips.
2. The Everyday Heroes: Station Wagons, SUVs & Crossovers
This is where most people feel at home. Mid-range vehicles, station wagons, or compact SUVs like the Dacia Duster usually offer a solid roof load (often 75 kg). This gives you the full selection. You can decide whether you like it small and aerodynamic or need space for 3-4 people.
Our recommendation: Here, Compact, Expedition and Family Plus fit.
Examples of suitable car brands & models:
- Dacia (Duster, Jogger, Sandero Stepway): Dacia drivers love the price-performance ratio. Our tents perfectly match the robust nature of these cars.
- VW Golf Variant / Passat: The popular station wagons are perfect travel companions for the Expedition or Family Plus.
- Skoda Octavia / Superb: Lots of space in the trunk and the huge bed on top.
- Toyota RAV4 / Ford Kuga: Our tents look particularly good on these SUVs.
3. The Giants: Buses, Vans & Transporters
Do you drive a bus or a large off-roader? Congratulations, you have a free choice! Due to the large roof area and high roof load (often 100 kg+), you can mount any of our models – or even two next to each other, if you're creative. Here it's all about maximum luxury and space.
Our recommendation: All models fit. Just choose the one you like best!
Examples of suitable car brands & models:
- VW Bus (T5, T6, T7): The Bulli is the camping symbol. Whether it's a T6 or the new T7 – our tents expand the sleeping area upwards, leaving the living space below.
- Mercedes V-Class / Vito: Elegance meets adventure.
- Land Rover Defender / Toyota Land Cruiser: For the true expedition into the wilderness.
- Ford Tourneo / Citroën Spacetourer: Ideal for large families.
Conclusion: Your car can do more than you think
No matter if you drive a Mini, a Dacia Duster, or a VW T7 – we have the right rooftop tent for you. All you additionally need is a set of cross bars (roof rack) that fits your specific vehicle model. The tent is mounted on it in a few minutes.
